What are Seminars?

Our seminars connect the past with the present, encouraging dialogue, reflection, and new perspectives.

“Our seminars connect the past with the present, encouraging dialogue, reflection, and new perspectives.”

Our seminars are designed to be informative and reflective. Unlike workshops, which rely on physical participation and creative activity, seminars are centered on listening, discussion, and analysis. Each session is led by a presenter who brings history and culture to life through storytelling, multimedia, and guided conversation. The goal is not to create in the moment but to think critically, ask questions, and leave with a deeper understanding of the subject.

Participants will encounter a range of topics that open windows into African American history and expression. African American Heritage in Stories, Games, Songs and Dances highlights traditions that shaped communities, while Growing up in the 1920’s: African American Expressive Art examines everyday life and creativity during a period of profound change. Through Harlem Renaissance through the Eyes of its Artists and Poets, attendees can reflect on the voices and visions that defined a golden age of Black art, music, and literature.

Our adult-focused seminars go even further in depth. Puzzle at Port Royal presents a historical look at the aftermath of slavery and the experiment of free labor during Reconstruction. Our Proper Sphere uses the story of aviator Bessie Coleman to examine women’s roles in the 1920s. A Separate Cinema explores the forgotten world of “race films” and the Black filmmakers of the 1930s, while Harlem Renaissance revisits the voices and creativity of artists, writers, and performers who changed the cultural landscape.

Each seminar lasts 60 minutes and is built to encourage dialogue and reflection. Whether through audio, video, or traditional presentation, the content connects the past with the present, inviting participants to expand their perspective and carry the stories forward.
